NOW HIRING - VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
POSITION DESCRIPTION: We’re looking for a Veterinary Technician for our non-profit veterinary clinic in Trotwood, Ohio. Our goal is to help Dayton become a no-kill community by making veterinary services more accessible to everyone. Gem City Vet is operated by Gem City Kitties, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that works closely with Gem City Catfe.
We offer wellness services at reduced rates for low-income families to help keep pets in their homes. We are looking for a veterinary technician who is interested in animal welfare and enjoys the personal satisfaction of serving a population that may not otherwise have the means to provide for their pet’s care. Our ideal candidate is excited about creating a more compassionate community and alleviating pain and suffering through high-quality care at affordable prices. We aim to keep pets comfortable and in homes where they are loved.
We are passionate about minimizing fear, anxiety, stress, and pain for our patients. Team members in our clinic will be responsible for providing service and communication to clients, members of the public, co-workers, and patients consistent with our standards. We are a high-volume clinic and are looking for candidates who can work quickly and efficiently, while also communicating clearly and kindly.
We currently provide wellness care alone. This position would not require surgery or on-call hours.
SCHEDULE + PAY: Compensation ranges from $16 - $23, depending on experience and availability. This part-time position requires one shift per week on Monday from 8:30am - 2pm.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides compassionate care to patients with Fear Free practices in mind
Perform all duties in accordance with medical policies and procedures
Prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas
Perform physical examinations; record observations on patients
Assist the doctor in medical procedures or treatments
Give injections and administer oral medications per policy
Assist in restraining patients and keeping a safe environment for both patients and GCV staff
Perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draw blood for laboratory analysis; maintain file of lab test results and ensure that test results are recorded in patient records
Enter medical records into clinic software
Counsel clients on various aspects of animal care; explain dosage/purpose of medications; reinforce the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home
Understand usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients
Communicate with veterinary clinic team members to ensure an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies is maintained, as determined by the inventory control system
Implement and follow procedures set by the Board of Directors
REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Education: Graduate of a collegiate veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Training Activities or equivalent program in veterinary technology.
Experience: 1 year related experience working with animals in a clinical setting.
Certification/Licensure: LVT license or CVT/RVT certification preferred but not required
Must have deep concern and empathy for animals
Must be able to pass a background check
Require interactions with animals owned by the public and has risks of bites or scratches
Bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, lifting 50 lb items
Exposure to cleaning agents, allergens, and zoonotic disease
Ability to learn new computer programs quickly
COVID inoculation required, tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations highly encouraged
